PAIR rare, French Toy League, antique cloth, "Pierrot & Pierrette" boudoir dolls

Description

This charming and seldom found, pair of
French made, antique (circa 1920s),
firmly stuffed
cloth,
"Pierrot & Pierrette",
boudoir dolls each measure a little over 14 inches long and wear all their original clothing. Resembling the dolls made for the
Polish Victim's Relief Fund and Mme. Paderewski
, they were probably produced by
Mme. Dhomon
who is listed as making
floppy cloth clown dolls in France around 1916 (French Toy League).
Since several different artists and manufacturers were making similar dolls during this period it is difficult to be certain exactly which group produced them (see "Cloth Dolls-1920-30s"-Judd for further study). They each have blonde human hair wigs, finely stitched center face and neck seams with distinctive nose and chin formation as well as painted brows and long eyelashes and
mouths with separate lips
. Their sewn-on clothing is very detailed with deep blue (organdy-like) outfits with red stripes and headdresses to match. They have floppy jointed long limbs with shaped knees and bent elbows. Both dolls are in excellent, very clean condition with no fading or stains, no tears or repairs and no odors as they are from a smoke free home.
